The salt marsh sparrow is disappearing from its home on the East Coast and could be headed for extinction in as little as 50 years, say scientists whose work could help protect the little birds.
The sparrows, which weigh about half an ounce, live in coastal areas from Maine to Virginia during the breeding season and migrate farther south in the winter. Researchers with a group of universities have been tracking them for several years and reported this week that eight out of every 10 of the birds has disappeared in the past 15 years.
The birds still number in the tens of thousands. But University of Maine professor Brian Olsen, one of the researchers studying the sparrow, said their population has dropped about 9 percent annually since 1998.
Olsen said coastal construction of structures such as roads and railways has restricted the flow of the tides to salt marshes and interfered with the birds' habitat. Sea-level rise has also hurt the sparrows, he said. Read on..
Did you know there is a age old law in the USA that the first female in a family is responsible for the care of her elder parents?.
Studies show that 40% of women have sole custody of their children and have sole responsibility to bear the cost of rearing their children. Moreover, woman have been losing billions of dollars a year on not getting equal pay!
Women are tossed down the money pit by society. As sole caregivers women they lose billions of dollars for retirement social security payment because they have lost years of credit to stay at home to rear small children.
More retirement women then ever are sleeping on friends couches when they retire because they can not afford to own a home or pay high rent. (Sole custody consists of an arrangement whereby only one parent has physical and legal custody of a child.) It cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to rear just one child.
Summary: President Obama announced that the Department of Labor will expand overtime pay to millions of American workers.
And how about that $15.00 a hour salary across the nation? $15.00 a set salary will help many people climb out of poverty. Including mom & pop businesses & single mothers without funds from fathers. If people have extra money to spend & spend it at mom & pop businesses it will help the economy. More Women will benefit from the pay increase. It is about time to stop abusing women with low pay. The changes during the 80's and 90's brought about the Violence Against Women Act VAWA If we do not erase women abuse today (such as low salaries), then we will seek a life further without able mothers to buy food & clothing for their children. As for Prince, results from the late musician's toxicology tests are still pending, but the investigation into his death has focused on his supposed addiction to painkillers, stemming from chronic hip pain. Prince was in possession of painkillers at the time of his death, and according to a search warrant, the musician was treated by a doctor and prescribed unspecified medications twice in April, including the day before he died.
